Green Tip for the Month

August

Turn off all appliances at the power point when not in use to cut back on power used "on standby".100 watts saved is 2.4kWh (about 50c) per day and saves over $180 per year and 900 kg of greenhouse gases.

September

Only heat as much water as you need to make a cup of tea or coffee.
If you put in 4 cups of water and only need  one, it uses 4 times as much energy and takes 4 times as long to heat.

October

Always use the cold starting water to help get your washing up water to the right temperature rather than wasting it. Always use the minimum amount of water, too, for what has to be washed.

November

If you are updating appliances, make sure to check the latest energy saving innovations. For example, to take advantage of the new Free to Air television stations purchase a new TV using LED technology with a 6 star energy rating. It will use less than 0.08 kWh every hour of use.

December

If you don't need a cooler often, consider a portable evapourative air cooler. They are less than 8% of the cost of a ducted evapourative
airconditioning system and operate on about 40 watts or less. Evapourative air conditioning is a much cheaper option than reverse cycle airconditioning but may not suit your home. Discuss the options with the store of your choice.
